"Wherever there are ashes, new things can grow. Even in Hiroshima, after the atomic bomb, the first plant that grew was Oleander. I think about that often...My Oleander was love. Maternal love, self-love, platonic love, universal love.” — artist @emiliehalpern for the Apiece Apart Woman series, photographed by @clairelindsay. #apieceapart #apieceapartwoman

"Peace is not always easy to grasp or keep close. In the process of attaining and protecting it, you may find yourself tired, weary, and uncertain on how to keep your peace safe. While being uncertain is normal, continue to commit yourself to peacefulness. You are worthy of every drop of sweetness and ease that you encounter. Being tested is a part of the journey. Giving up, and letting go, is not.” — @alex_elle  Above, photo by @andreagentl for the #apieceapartwoman series. #apieceapart#alexelle

In 2009 Mya Henry and her husband Eric made a big (“some might say crazy”) decision. Two New Yorkers working in food, they were going to pack up their lives, move to Tulum, and open a restaurant. The result became @hartwoodtulum, a humble 40-seat spot with no electricity — everything cooked by wood fire. Mya is photographed, above, for our Apiece Apart Woman series, by @gretarybus

“...Nothing ever goes away until it has taught us what we need to know. If we run a hundred miles an hour to the other end of the continent in order to get away from the obstacle, we find the very same problem waiting for us when we arrive. It just keeps returning with new names, forms, manifestations until we learn whatever it has to teach us about where we are separating ourselves from reality, how we are pulling back instead of opening up, closing down instead of allowing ourselves to experience fully whatever we encounter, without hesitating or retreating into ourselves.” ― Pema Chödrön, “When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times” #notesfromapart
