Alice & Doris of ILootPaperie create goods with funny drawings that highlight their keen appreciation for puns and creative characters that remind you of the time in your life when you still look forward to recess.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
We actually started working with paper goods by dabbling in custom wedding invitations for some close friends. However, we’d always had a keen appreciation for greeting cards and wordplay so it seemed like a natural transition to the perfect way for us to put together a collection of cheeky thoughts and artwork that represents who we are.
WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION FOR THE BRAND NAME?
We always loved the story of our father looking up our last name “Lieu” in the dictionary to determine the spelling when he emigrated over as a graduate student. So ever since we were little, Alice has always aspired to weave our family name, Lieu, into a company name. We initially started with “In Lieu of Ordinary Things” but then one night we were playing around with variations and realized the acronym spelled “ILOOT,” we added “paperie” to it and voila! Pierre, our French stripe–wearing bandit mascot, sprang to life.
WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST HURDLE YOU HAD TO OVERCOME TO GET STARTED?
The biggest hurdle was getting the extra push to actually start the company – we had talked about it for a while and had even filed the DBA to reserve the company name but were occupied by other various obligations at the time – which leads nicely into the next question.
WHAT WAS THAT “JUST DO IT” MOMENT FOR YOU TO GET STARTED?
It ironically came about when Doris started considering and interviewing for a possible relocation to her day job company’s London office. It was then that we decided that we should move forward and set up the operational structure of Ilootpaperie so that we could still collaborate remotely if the relocation went through; as you can guess, it didn’t and here we are today – moving into the sixth year of Ilootpaperie’s existence.
