When I was working as a corporate lawyer, I spent 10, 12, sometimes 14 hours a day reading contracts, checking things off lists, and filling in dozens of templates👩🏻‍💼 — There was very little creativity in my job, so I felt compelled to add it in different places. I used to spend a lot of time getting dressed in the morning, adding the perfect accessories and coordinating makeup and shoes. I shopped online a LOT - for clothes, furniture and decorations to make my apartment more colorful. I think it was all a way to try and use this creative energy that I had, but didn’t know how to channel. 🤷🏻‍♀️ — I wish I had listened more to what my life was telling me I needed. But I didn’t know how to and I was scared of what my inner voice would tell me.😣 — Is anyone at this place right now? 🙋🏻‍♀️ — If you are, I wanna tell you that you can just listen. You don’t have to take drastic action right away. Just start by listening and making note and taking tiny steps. Change doesn’t have to be a dramatic upheaval. It can start with a gentle, loving nudge in the right direction. 💕 — Poetry by @yrsadaleyward

Wait for it.... 🙅🏻‍♀️ — This morning is not a kickass kinda morning for me. It’s a barely-got-outta-bed, too much coffee, not-enough energy morning. 😴 — And that’s ok. Even when you’re living your “dream” life, some days are still gonna feel like crap. 😕 The key to staying in the game, whether that’s a business or a creative hobby or just a goal of being more happy, is to cut yourself some slack on those days. Don’t tell yourself to have to kick ass every day. Some days, you just do your best. 😄Even if your best is sub-par, shaky-ass calligraphy. 😂 You do your best and tell yourself “good job” and you gain back your energy slowly and you kick ass on another day. And the day after that. 🙌 — So who’s out there’s doing their damn best today, whatever that may be? 🙋🏻‍♀️

This was the first stretch of real nib-to-paper calligraphy I’ve done in awhile and I enjoyed every sloooow, scratchy minute of it 😌 #realtimelettering — Any creative business owners out there surprised by how little they actually practice their creative craft? 🙋🏻‍♀️ — When I first started my business, I spent all day doing calligraphy and designing greeting cards. 😆 But then, once it came time to actually set things up, I spent days photographing my products, editing photos, setting up domain names and Squarespace and Etsy pages, writing bios and product descriptions and researching pricing. 🙄 At first, I kinda resented all that stuff, but now I think it’s the most interesting part of the job because there’s always something new to learn 😃 — Which is just to say that the journey is always evolving. And I hope it always does. Just like I hope your Friday is rapidly evolving towards a cocktail 😂

Table numbers used to scare the shit out of me 😂 I remember the first time a bride asked for them, in a pretty typical 5x7” size. On the outside I was all “Sure, no problem, I can make those in a matching style and color” 😁 On the inside, I was like “Crap! How am I gonna write such huge-ass numbers with my nib and not fuck them up?” 😨 — So now I know the answer is: use a small brush and paint the numbers! Sketch them out in pencil first in a style that matches your calligraphy, then dip your brush into the same calligraphy ink so the color stays consistent 👍 — It’s fun to look back at the little problems that used to freak me out and think how solvable they were, even though they felt overwhelming. Helps me to keep perspective on my current freakout situations. 😊 — Anything YOU used to freak out about that seems easy-peasy now? If yes, give yo-self a little pat on the back ok? You deserve it, you rockstar you 🙌

I distinctly remember the feeling of walking into my first calligraphy workshop and seeing all the tools laid out and my name written in gorgeous calligraphy 😍 Just the thought that I was going to spend the afternoon doing nothing but learning and playing and creating was SO. FUCKING. EXCITING. 😆 — If that sounds like heaven to you, then I’d love for you to join me THIS SATURDAY in Silver Lake 🙌 There will be a beautiful calligraphy kit with your name on it, wonderful people to meet, and three hours of drinking wine and learning a relaxing new craft. 😌 (And my occasional swearing and random dance breaks 💃🏻) — Click the link in my bio to grab your seat! This is going to be a small, intimate class where you get plenty of my personal attention - I can’t wait to meet you! 😃 — 📸 by @valvogt2

Hey, you’re doing a fuckin’ great job ok? 🙌 I don’t think we tell ourselves that enough. But if you’ve done something nice for someone (dogs included!) recently, if you’re trying to grow in some small way, if things feel like they’re going to shit but you’re hanging on somehow, then take one deep breath and tell yourself “you’re doing ok” 😌 — If that helped brighten your Monday, even a tiny bit, lemme know. Cause hearing from you brightens MY day 😊 — (Also, which of the two videos do you like? I couldn’t decide so thought I’d just post both 😂)

I haven’t quite processed yet so I’m not ready to share the full story, but I hope at least one of you will hear this message. LIVE YOUR FUCKING LIFE. 👊 It could be over so much sooner than you realize. And what if it was? Would you regret holding back because you were scared or not 100% ready or listened to all the doubting voices in your life? 🙅🏻‍♀️ — When I was upending my life, quitting my corporate law job with nothing else lined up, I would always ask myself, am I going to regret not doing this when I’m on my deathbed? It sounds morbid, but it’s been the touchstone that helped me to take so many leaps. 💪 — If anyone out there is hearing this, just raise your hands up for me ok? 🙌 Cause it’s really fucking important, amirite?

Oh did you think I was done calligraphying on random edible things? 😂 — I’ve been asked why I do this, and the answer is because it’s FUN 😆 I get a little curious thrill out of wondering whether my nib will work on a new surface. And it also makes me see calligraphy in a new light. 😃 That’s kinda been my whole mission - to make people see calligraphy as an approachable thing. Not an intimidating, old-fashioned, fussy thing. It’s something you can play with in a really joyful, free way 🤗 Those who do it know what I mean right? — So I gotta ask you - do you prefer white onions or red? 🤣

HOW THE HELL DO I PRICE MY WORK?? 😱 — Let me take you back to October 2016... I was ten months into my calligraphy business and had mostly been selling greeting cards and custom prints. So when a small jewelry company approached me to do live calligraphy at their store, I was ecstatic! 😃 Now at the time, I thought $60/hr was a pretty good wage for a professional calligrapher. So guess what I quoted them? $60/hr 🙄 — I didn’t realize that it would take me two hours to travel to and from the venue, an hour to setup and cleanup after, that I would have to take out 30% for taxes, and that I would have to pay for my own supplies and $12 parking! 😕 The company responded back asking if I would be open to doing $50/hr plus $100 worth of their jewelry... now I’m not a huge jewelry person but I really wanted this job so I said yes.🤷🏻‍♀️ — After all that, my take home pay was about $13/hr - not anything near what I thought I would be making. 🤦🏻‍♀️ — I don’t regret taking that job at all! The company was lovely to work with, and I got great experience out of it. BUT, I wish I knew more before I had quoted my price 💵 — If any of this sounds familiar to you, or like something you wanna AVOID, then there’s something you need to check out.👇 — 🎉🎉🎉Becca from @thehappyevercrafter just released a full VIDEO COURSE and 98-PAGE PRICING GUIDE that tackles everything you need to know about pricing your work.🎉🎉🎉 It has actual charts with minimum amounts you should be charging for lots of different types of projects.🙌 — And for this week only, you can get LIFETIME access to the course and a private Facebook community where you can ask all your panicked pricing questions for just $75 USD!!🙀 — Click the link in my bio to enroll in the course! I totally bought Becca’s pricing guide when it was just an eBook and I’ve been through the entire course and IT. IS. GOLD 👏 So get on it and let’s make the money we deserve for our art! #panicfreepricingchallenge

24 hours left to save $50 on my signature calligraphy online course - Modern Calligraphy 101!! ⏰ After 10am PST on Tuesday, January 29, the price will go from $187 up to $237 😱 — And here’s one final example of the kickass results that you can get from this course! 👉 Yesenia (@inkladiesco) tried teaching herself calligraphy but found it hard to stick to. She craved STRUCTURE that would make daily practice a no-brainer (can anyone relate?) 🙋🏻‍♀️ After taking my course, she saw a huge difference in her calligraphy. This is what happens when you INVEST👏IN👏YOURSELF! — I’m putting this course out there because I’ve seen how calligraphy can change lives.
