A native of Los Angeles, designer Michelle Durand was influenced by the era and environment to which she was born. Steeped in the early musical scene of the ’70s and ’80s she was transfixed by the fashion-forward women of rock, like Debbie Harry, Pat Benatar, and Stevie Nicks. Imprinted to memory are the strong visuals of these women, as well as an instinct to connect with their vitality. She perceived the clothing as a portal to their energy.
While attending Los Angeles Trade Technical College, Durand recalled conversations in her teens with her grandmother as she read fashion-magazine editorials. Her grandmother often asked, “Who would wear that?” That made an impression on Durand; it felt important. Today, her design process and aesthetic create impressionable garments that are also immanently wearable.
Inspiration comes from the interplay of shape and form , texture, from the drama of monochromatic schemes , oragami , the art of accentuation, ideas of friends and strangers, architecture, environment, and integrating street and high end.
Durand’s original focus is on pants–pants that embolden and enliven, incorporating vision and pragmatism.
