I support the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr by giving to organizations like @splcenter and donating my time to @turnaroundartsnational. His legacy lives on in a continued fight against oppression and racism that still destroys the lives of people of color in our country.

Marching once a year is not enough. Not even close to enough. Yet, this is the current framework America is operating under and it feels very important to me to show up, to add my body to the number in attendance, to let that number be a reminder that says “we do not like this, we do not agree with what is happening in our country.” If we stop showing up to say this, if we stop coming up with new ways to create change, it will only get worse and worse. Please don’t give up. Please keep trying. Thank you to all the grassroots organizers, to anyone who marches, to all who choose action over apathy.

She is my kin. She is my guidepost. As the rain pours down the mountain I cry and cry for losing her does hurt, but I know tomorrow I will wake and read her words as always, joyous, known, in ongoing celebration of our shared reverence for planet earth. Mary Oliver, my poet, rest easy now, you’ve given us all so very much and I’m infinitely grateful. I will keep doing our work until my last day.

Still reeling from this past weekend @secular_sabbath - there were so many glorious moments. As I was leaving, I went to place a small owl figurine on the eastern point of the mandala that we built by hand. As I did this, two hawks swooped down and led me into the desert where I stood and looked up to find a circular rainbow above me. I cried grateful tears. Life is challenging and horrific at times, but earth, solitude, and creative togetherness are always the best medicine. Thank you @gene.vi.eve for letting me be your poet and to @twobunchpalms for hosting us. #secularsabbath

Join us this weekend under the stars, soaking in the healing waters @twobunchpalms for a truly special @secular_sabbath - I’ll be leading a poetry workshop and joining my love @elenastonaker in her Artist as Muse magic, accompanied by the ambient beauty of @joelshearer. Don’t miss this exceptional desert experience!

I’m overjoyed to announce that I finished my manuscript for the next volume of The Edge of the Continent! Volume Two, in this trilogy about California, focuses on the great city of Los Angeles. It’s out this spring! I can’t wait to share my complicated love of this place.

Want to hear me read a new batch of poems from my forthcoming book about LA? You’re in luck! I’ll be reading tomorrow night @storiesbooksandcafe at 8pm alongside a great group of writers and musicians. Free! Raising funds for @treepeople_org if you’re able to give. Looking forward to seeing you all! Photo @thedeependclub by @sunfolk

This has been a year of great struggle and great celebration, sickness, trauma, and immense joy. A balance. To close it by leaving my special apartment behind, a place where I’ve written two books and thousands of poems, is to say that I trust in the onward motion of life, I trust in newness and risk, and above all I trust in love. Thank you to all who support my path. Photo @shelbyduncan
