#swellpressprocess // In 2014 started Swell Press as a creative outlet outside of my ‘real’ job- after taking a letterpress lesson I was immediately hooked and started renting a press at a local studio, and then eventually bought my own press. I never had firm plans to make it a full time business, but would sometimes wish that maybe one day, I could quit my job and support myself by doing this thing that I love so much. Swell Press organically and slowly grew over a few years- first as a side hustle in my garage, then outside my garage into a studio as a full-time hustle, then an addition of an intern, hiring a press woman, and then another employee. When I hired our client services coordinator I had ZERO systems in place, and it was her main job to get us organized. We spent the better part of a few weeks researching tools to streamline the business, the workflow, and our client experience. It’s all wonderfully organized now, but I always look back and wish I had put those procedures in place from the very start. So here’s my tip for you, from someone who learned the hard way- if you’re ever planning on turning your passion project into a larger operation, or just want a little more control over your side-hustle, start putting systems in place early. It’s never too small of an operation to have an organized workflow, and this way if you are lucky enough to bring someone on, the transition won’t be like mine- you, frazzled, handing over the most disorganized tangled mess and asking someone to *please* decipher it (speaking from experience here)! I’m most creative when I have the mental space to get into the zone, and that mental space comes from knowing things are buttoned up elsewhere and not feeling overwhelmed. Shown here is our beloved clipboard method- while we use @mydubsado to track a lot of our workflow, I’m still old-school and need a physical print out to represent the job. Every booked job gets a clipboard, and that clipboard follows the project- on the wall when we’re designing, and in the production room when we’re printing. In Stories I’ve linked up a blog post where I share some links of resources that might also be of service, check it out!

If you watch our Stories you’ll see the labor of love that #letterpress is, but I want to share a little bit more about what goes into the printing process, and why it’s our favorite at Swell Press. Letterpress printing works by pressing one color at a time- the ink is applied onto the press, and the rollers distribute the ink over the plate, which is essentially a stamp with the design that’s being pressed. We custom mix every ink color to @pantone formula by hand- a shot of that process is shown here. Our Pantone guide shares color formulas in weights, so much like a recipe they’re carefully mixed to achieve that perfect final color. We offer everything at SP- digital print, foil, screen printing... and we’re certainly not limited to only paper (as seen with our hand painted acrylic invites)- but to me, few things beat the texture and tactility of the letterpress art form. 💕 🎨 (and no, this isn’t a sponsored post for Pantone, but if y’all are reading this I’d LOVE another formula guide 😏). I’ve also tagged some of my favorite vendors- @crownflexo for plates and @boxcar.press for their ink knives, and they’ve got a great letterpress starter kit with inks and some tools. There’s more resources for aspiring printers on the blog, too- (IG Live show note posts have links and vendors as well)! #swellpressprocess 📷: @courtneypaigeray

I’ve loved watching the variations of our “to the point” style save the date evolve over time. What began as an experiment with outlined neon ombré type when I was learning to press at Otis has become one of our most popular designs, years later. It has a totally different vibe in grey with the added border, and I’m loving it! (I posted a little trip down memory lane in Stories so you can see how SP has evolved over the years as well 😝) #swellpressweddings #swellpresssemicustom

test prints and accidental art // this is the last plate of a piece we recently pressed (check out 2 posts back), but I’m actually liking it as a stand-alone print- it’s conjuring some new beginnings / rebirth feels. Maybe it’s still the novelty of 2019, or maybe I’m just projecting my desire for this year to be one of newness and change onto it 🤷🏼‍♀️. Either way, see what you wish. 🌞#swellpressprocess #swellpressrorschach

lately it’s been all about assembly on our IG stories, so I wanted to share another suite that shows how much the right presentation can take everything up a notch (or three!) Chris and Jeff’s invitation and insert was topped with our lasercut ‘pack your bags’ insert, and then we used neon pink string to tie everything together. Neon pink envelopes with white digital guest addresses and a liner with the tiniest blind impression trees were the final touch! #swellpressweddings #bunnyandbearwed #packyourbags

yesterday on Stories I gave a little rundown of the process of printing our 2019 cards - there were 3 plates / 3 ink colors used, but overprinting and tight registration created 5 colors and just a *mini* headache. Totally worth it! #swellpressprocess

a peek at Kayla and Matt’s trifold insert, with a hand-painted map, blind impression (I’m in love with the Palm and hibiscus in the center!), 2 ink colors, and a mini envelope with an informational insert. Here’s hoping 2019 brings more suites like this, where I can combine my love of watercolor, blind impression, and anything mini 💌🤞🏼#swellpressweddings
