@swrve_la : México!!!
Today we went to Monte Albán just outside of Oaxaca City. We marveled at the mountaintop archeological complex and its rich history. From Wikipedia:
Besides being one of the earliest cities of Mesoamerica, Monte Albán's importance stems also from its role as the pre-eminent Zapotec socio-political and economic center for close to a thousand years. Founded toward the end of the Middle Formative period at around 500 BC, by the Terminal Formative (ca.100 BC-AD 200) Monte Albán had become the capital of a large-scale expansionist polity that dominated much of the Oaxacan highlands and interacted with other Mesoamerican regional states such as Teotihuacan to the north.
We then went hunting for alebrijes in the town of Arrazola, where they originated, and got some excellent specimens (but were too enthralled to remember to take some 📷) and then off to San Bartolo Coyotepec for black clay pottery.
If you've never been to Mexico we highly suggest starting with Oaxaca. The city is lovely and manageable, and there are so many things to see and explore in and outside of the city. And the food is just amazing.
Some of our favorites are the stamp museum, the Tamayo museum, and the artisanal market. But really the best things are always what you discover, like that one trip we came across a tiny typewriter repair and used machine shop and we got a perfect little Olivetti.
